Your endpoints, your JSON
- GET, POST, PUT, PATCH and DELETE on any path you choose
- Any status code and JSON body, edited in a full code editor
- Collections to group endpoints, like Auth, Catalog and Orders
- Project variables: define {{currency}} once and use it in every response
- Postman import (v2.0 and v2.1) to turn an existing collection into live endpoints
More than a JSON file
Public fake APIs such as JSONPlaceholder return generic sample data you cannot change. Local tools such as json-server are great for CRUD, but they run on your machine and return the happy path by default.
MockLab is hosted and returns your own data, and it can also behave like a real backend: require auth and reject bad tokens, return different responses depending on the request, and respond slowly.
Realistic edge cases
- GET /products?page=2 returns the second page, ?q=xyz returns an empty list
- POST /checkout with a declined card returns 402
- Any endpoint can return 500 after two seconds to test retries and error screens
Use it like any API
const res = await fetch("https://api.mocklab.studio/mock/your-project/products?page=1");
const { data, hasMore } = await res.json();Frequently asked questions
How is this different from JSONPlaceholder?
JSONPlaceholder serves fixed sample resources. With MockLab you define your own endpoints and responses, so the fake API matches the real one your backend team is building.
Do I need to run a server?
No. Endpoints are hosted and live at a public HTTPS URL as soon as you save them.
Can I use URL parameters like /users/:id?
Not yet: paths match exactly, so /users/42 is its own endpoint. Query parameters can already switch responses with variants.
Is MockLab free?
Yes, MockLab is free while it is in beta. No credit card required.
